To highlight her agency's message that young people need to act for themselves, UN cultural agency (UNESCO) chief Audrey Azoulay, quoting renowned New York writer, poet and musician Patti Smith, asked: "Who knows the heart of the youth but the youth itself?"

In addition, Azoulay said that an international conference on “the impact of the epidemic on youth” will be held in September, inviting young people to stay engaged and all civil society to “take advantage of the enormous potential of this unique, productive and incredibly talented group”.

UN Secretary-General Guterres stressed that from gender equality to education and skills development, young people demonstrate motivation, creativity and commitment, saying they cannot do it on their own, they need allies to make sure they are relevant, involved and understood. Guterres said, “I urge everyone to guarantee a seat at the table for young people as we build an inclusive, just and sustainable development world for all.”
