The Best Way to Teach Sustainability to Kids: Board Game

In this article, we will give some examples of sustainability-themed board games that teach while entertaining children.

Board games enable children to develop mental skills such as attention, planning, organization, focus and foresight. Regardless of the age group, board games help children think about the subject, learn to develop strategies and do brain training by providing mental practices. Educational games will make a lifetime contribution with the mental skills that children will gain in their games without realizing it. As games are important in children's lives, it is very important that the materials used in the games are educational.

In this article, we will give some examples of sustainability-themed board games that teach while entertaining children.

1. The Future of the World

The main purpose of this board game, released with the SDG4Kids label, is to contribute to the behavioral, physical, verbal and emotional development of children and individuals. The game is a game based on sharing and chat, not race and knowledge.

How to play?
The Future of the World is played between two people or as two teams (groups of 2 or 3). Both sides roll the dice for the right to start the game, and the side with the bigger dice starts the game. The person (or team) who takes the right to play rolls the dice again while on the starting line. It moves on the map as much as the number of dice coming, and leaves the dice for the purpose written in the box where the dice came. The dice are thrown again, the number that comes up determines which target card of that goal you will choose.

2. Go-Goals

The main purpose of the game is to help people understand the importance of their role in the future of the planet - as individual, team member and most importantly, responsible world citizen. In other words, it is to teach the Sustainable Development Goals to children all over the world in a simple and child-friendly way.

How to play?

There are 63 households in the playground. Players roll a single dice and advance as many digits as the number on the rolled dice. Players take turns rolling the dice and moving their pawns by the number on the dice. If the player reaches the bottom of a ladder, they can instantly climb to the top of the ladder. If the player reaches the top of a waterslide, they are instantly at the bottom of the slide. If the player reaches a Sustainable Development Goal digit (1-17), he draws a card corresponding to the number of goals. Another player must read the question on the card. The correct answer to the question card causes the player to roll the dice once more. The first player to reach the '2030' field wins! If the player rolls more than the required number to reach this area, they must advance to the '2030' area and then back up by the remaining number.
