Reducing the Carbon Footprint on Campus: Breathing into the Future, Written by Our Student

Prepared by: Seyit Erol Kesbiç – Department of International Trade and Business

The world is changing rapidly. Young people like us will determine the direction of this change. Our carbon footprint, the total amount of greenhouse gases we emit in our daily lives, is one of the silent determinants of our future. However, the good news is: This footprint can be reduced with conscious choices.

University campuses are not just learning spaces; they are also places where social transformation begins. If change begins on campus, the world changes.

1. Using Energy Responsibly

Turning off the lights when leaving the classroom, putting computers on sleep mode, unplugging unnecessary outlets… These seemingly small habits can save thousands of kilowatts of energy. Even if every student were to adopt this mindset in just their own room, a significant reduction in the campus's annual energy consumption could be achieved.

2. Zero-Emission Transportation

Walking, cycling, or opting for an electric scooter on campus both reduces carbon emissions and energizes the body. Remember, every step you take is also a promise to the planet.

3. Say Goodbye to Single-Use Items

The coffee or water we drink throughout the day unknowingly becomes part of a massive waste stream. Carrying a thermos, using metal straws, or opting for glass bottles... all make a small but sustainable difference.

4. Recycle, Pay Your Debt to Nature

Actively using recycling bins on campus protects not only the environment but also resources. Properly separating paper, plastic, glass, and metal waste contributes significantly to our university's sustainability goals.

5. Say Hello to a Greener Plate

A plant-based diet is one of the most effective ways to reduce your carbon footprint. Reducing meat consumption even one day a week significantly reduces your annual personal carbon emissions. Both nature and your body will thank you.

6. Think Green in Campus Activities

Reducing plastic use when organizing events or club activities, turning to digital posters, and planning waste-free events make a difference. Because sustainability is strengthened not only by individual but also by community awareness.

7. Promote a Culture of Sharing

Share or donate unused books, clothes, or items. As we simplify our consumption habits, the burden on nature will be lighter.

Change Starts with Us

The campus lives not only with knowledge but also with values. If we become environmentally conscious youth who respect nature, this culture will spread like wildfire. As we reduce our carbon footprint, humanity's conscience will grow.

Remember: Every time you turn off the light, every time you fill a thermos, every time you take a step—you are breathing life into the future.

Sincerely...
